What is it that makes a coffee shop a great one? Is it purely the coffee itself, or is it the aroma, the ambience, the ability to get work done easily? The décor, staff, and of course, the coffee, all undoubtedly play a role in giving a coffee shop a welcoming atmosphere. Here are some of our favorite spots to visit in Northern Michigan to grab a French press, pour over, latte, cappuccino, or a classic drip coffee. 

North Perk Coffee, Petoskey

Located in the Gaslight District of downtown Petoskey, just steps from Lake Michigan, this charming coffee shop strives to offer their patrons the best cup of joe in town. Each of the friendly baristas is well trained, knowledgeable and have a love for coffee. This space is a great place to relax, or to plug in and get some work done with free wireless internet. They also have a location in Boyne City, where they offer a slightly different atmosphere but with the same great coffee and service. In addition to delicious fair-trade coffee, you can expect to find wonderful breakfast treats and snacks. 

Populace Coffee Roasters, Petoskey

Step into this downtown Petoskey coffee roaster and be greeted by a sleek and modern aesthetic, but with a cozy vibe. A popular place among locals and visitors, what makes Populace special is their focus on quality ingredients. All syrups are homemade, and they offer many pastries and food items from local sources. With two other locations in Detroit and Bay City, this business had been named one of the best in Michigan. Their drink menu is designed for speed while maintaining quality, so you can expect to get your coffee quickly so that you can enjoy every sip.

Lake Charlevoix Coffee Company, Boyne City

LCCC is North Perk Coffee’s sister store, selling the same locally roasted coffee as their Petoskey location. Open year ‘round, this coffee house offers espresso, coffee, specialty drinks, snacks, grab’n go deli Items, and more in their gourmet market. Located close to the shores of Lake Charlevoix, LCCC is in a picturesque location in the bustling town of Boyne City. Hang out and have a work meeting in their cozy lounge area, or just grab a quick cup of iced coffee on your way out onto the water in the summertime. 

Rumpus Room, Village of Walloon Lake

This distinctive shop is in a former Walloon Lake cottage that was built in the early 1900s. When you step through the doors, you’ll notice its charm with original antiques, products from local artisans, and other quality goods for sale. In 2019, the coffee bar was added and is a welcome addition to the space. Cozy up next to the fire with a specialty coffee drink, a pastry from Ruthann’s Gourmet Bakery or a even a healthy, nutrient-packed smoothie. This is a great stop near Walloon Village; it is convenient and a hidden gem in Northern Michigan.
