Boyne Thunder Weekend

The Story Behind the Roar:

Why Boyne Thunder’s Poker Run Means More

By Jeff Wellman

DID YOU KNOW?

In 1994, Jeff Wellman launched the Camp Quality Fundraising Weekend—now known as the Champagne Cruise—in Boyne City to support Camp Quality, an organization dedicated to helping children with cancer.

As the event grew in popularity, the founder of Boyne Thunder approached Jeff about hosting their Poker Run boat race on the same July weekend. Jeff agreed—on one condition: that a portion of the proceeds go directly to Camp Quality. His commitment was deeply personal, driven by a passion for the cause and in memory of his late wife, Julie, who lost her battle with cancer.

Today, the Boyne Thunder Poker Run is one of the most anticipated events in Northern Michigan. It has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Camp Quality, blending high-speed excitement, breathtaking lake views, strong community spirit, and meaningful charitable impact—all in one unforgettable weekend.

CALLING ALL BOAT CAPTAINS

Camp Quality needs you and your boat for five hours during Boyne Thunder on Saturday, July 12, 2025, for a champagne cruise.

Enjoy a day in the sun on us, with all refreshments and food provided while supporting a local charity. Guests donating $200 each to Camp Quality will be invited onto your boat for a leisurely cruise of Lake Charlevoix and will enjoy a raft off with a front-row “seat” to the last card pick-up of the Boyne Thunder Poker Run in Horton Bay.

Camp Quality provides children with cancer and their families with year-round programs, experiences, and companionship.

If you have a large boat and are interested in giving back to your community and becoming a captain for this event please reach out.
