Best Places to Watch the Sun Set Over Lake Michigan

One thing is for certain – the sun sets every single day, no matter where you are. But, when is the last time you took the time to watch one? With Lake Michigan and many other beautiful lakes in our backyard, we are in an ideal location to watch the awe inspiring, calming sunsets over these majestic bodies of water. Here are some of our favorite spots to view the sunsets in Northern Michigan:

East Park

This waterfront park located between Petoskey and Bay Harbor offers panoramic views of Little Traverse Bay. The Park is perfect for a family outing, with a playground, picnic pavillion, benches, restrooms, and easy access from the highway and bike path. You can access the water’s edge via a steep hill that leads you down to the rock-studded shoreline. Take in the beautiful Lake Michigan water views as you watch the sun sink into the horizon. 

Petoskey City Marina, Bayfront Park or the Breakwall 

All located within a stone’s throw of one another and walkable from downtown, these are great places to watch the daylight fade over the Petoskey Marina and Little Traverse Bay. See the boats docking in their slips, tourists and locals fishing and walking on the breakwall, and enjoy panoramic views of the water. These are all fantastic and easy-to-access spots, not to mention photo opportunities, to watch the sunset.

The Bluff – Harbor Springs 

Hike up the hill and watch the sunset from above the town of Harbor Springs! The bluff is just a short walk from downtown, and provides great views of Harbor Springs, Harbor Point, and Little Traverse Bay. The view may look familiar as it is a popular photo opportunity and vista for locals and tourists alike. The uphill walk is well worth the view! 

Petoskey State Park

Bring a big beach towel or blanket and watch the sunset from the picturesque sand dunes at the Petoskey State Park, located right between Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Easily accessed from Highway M-119, this white sand beach tucked in the back of Little Traverse Bay has a campground, picnic tables, bathrooms and trails to explore.

Avalanche Preserve

This wonderful trail system has 300 acres rising to altitudes of over 1,000 feet, providing a commanding view of Northern Michigan The ridge is predominantly forested, and has miles of mountain biking, hiking and cross country skiing trails. The long staircase to the view at the top is well worth it, with panoramic views of Northern Michigan and its lakes as your reward!
